Op vrijdag 28 juni was Elton John met de Amerikaanse president Joe Biden aanwezig bij de opening van het Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center in New York. Het is gevestigd op 51 Christopher Street in Greenwich Village en dus op historische grond: op de nummers 51 en 53 was de Stonewall Inn gevestigd.
In een toespraak refereerde John aan de rellen die 55 jaar geleden in en voor dat nu geopende centrum plaatsvonden:
‘I can say as a proud English gay man that this is one of the biggest honors of my life to be here today, having watched what took place 55 years ago. Fifty-five years ago, in this sacred spot of the Stonewall uprising, gay activists stood strong and ignited a movement that has changed history for the better.’
John bedankte Biden in zijn speech voor ‘celebrating our place as equal and valued members of society, and for taking concrete action to make our lives better. ‘Toch waarschuwde hij dat de strijd voor vrijheid en gelijkheid nog altijd doorgaat, want: ‘Over 540 anti-LGBTQ+ bills were introduced in state legislatures across America this year. Disgraceful.
Ook zei hij: ‘And, as President Biden has reminded us, today too we face one of those seminal moments. Do we stand up for our vision and our values, or let misinformation and senseless scapegoating turn back the clock? No fucking way. No!’
John nam daarbij eens te meer een persoonlijk standpunt in: ‘In this moment too, we must take pride and take arms, so let us honor LGBTQ+ people everywhere who have journeyed for justice, and commit as I do — as long as ‘I’m still standing’ — to continue to stand with you as we commit to build a better, fairer, and more just world for us all.’
Tot besluit van de opening speelde John een korte set, zichzelf uiteraard begeleidend op de piano: hij speelde onder meer ‘Bennie and The Jets’, ‘I’m Still Standing’ en ‘Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me’.
Ook Biden refereerde aan de rellen van 28 juni 1968, toen de New Yorkse politie weer eens een inval deed in de Stonewall Inn:
‘Fifty-five years ago today on this hallowed ground, a pivotal story for our nation unfolded. The soul of the nation was literally tested — that’s not hyperbole, the soul of the nation was tested — and the heart of this movement was ignited and the course of history was changed forever.
This beloved bar became the site of a call to cry for freedom, dignity, and equality and respect. Rebellion had galvanized the LGBTQ+ community all across the nation, quite frankly all around the world.’
De Stonewall Inn had net als veel andere cafés voor homoseksuelen geen drankvergunning, want die werd geweigerd door de autoriteiten vanwege het publiek dat er kwam.
Drank werd er echter toch geschonken, al dan niet geleverd oor de maffia, die de politie afkocht.
Op die 28e juni vochten niet alleen de aanwezige gasten terug, ook kwamen er veel mensen op de inval af en daardoor ontstonden rellen, die zes dagen aanhielden.
Daardoor ontstond bij New Yorkse seksuele minderheden het besef dat zij gezamenlijk hun belangen moesten behartigen en richtten ze organisaties op die politiek actief werden en kranten en tijdschriften.
Een jaar later vond op 28 juni de eerste Pride-parade plaats in New York:
