Elton John heeft zich in een stemadvies voor de landelijke verkiezingen duidelijk uitgesproken voor Keir Starmer, de Britse Labourleider en zijn partij.
Op zaterdag 29 juni waren John en zijn man David Furnish te zien tijdens een campagnebijeenkomst van Labour in Londen.
Ze spraken zich voor Labour uit, doordat die het beleid van die partij jonge muzikanten zou helpen.
Elton John stak uitgesproken van wal: ‘It’s heartbreaking to see the hopes of Britain’s next generation of creative talent downtrodden and destroyed by bureaucracy and red tape.
The rich cultural exchange and education that informed my early years and paved the way for my career and success is drying up and in danger of dying out completely. And it’s not just the musicians, but the whole team that puts together a tour and the wider industry that relies on emerging talent to thrive in the future.’
Furnish ging daar nog eens overheen in zijn functie van CEO van Rocket Entertainemnt, Elton John’s managementbureau: ‘It’s madness to treat a hugely successful sector with such disdain, particularly one that has been the envy of the world for decades and contributes billions to the British economy every year, and has given us unrivalled soft power across the globe.
We spent years trying to engage with the UK government in a meaningful and productive manner on these issues.
Now, Labour’s manifesto sets out sensible and practical proposals that promise to give every young person a creative education and help young and emerging musicians achieve the roots to success that have been cruelly and pointlessly snatched away from them.’

De ook al zijn hele loopbaan geëngageerde zinger-zongwriter Billy Bragg had op X ook trouwens een stemadvies: hij wil de Liberaal-Democratische Partij de tweede partij van het land maken en dus de leider van de oppositie.
Ook hij gaat uit van winst van Labour en ziet dat juist als een kans een grotere verandering tot stand te brengen: ‘Everyone knows Labour are going to win the election, but if you’re feeling like there’s no point in voting as the outcome is a foregone conclusion, I’d like to draw your attention to something really radical that is on offer tomorrow.
The opportunity to consign the Tories into third place in parliament. If the Liberal Democrats win more seats than the Tories, they will become the official opposition. That will give the LibDems the right to six questions a week at PMQs. 17 opposition days to push their agenda and hold votes and first right of reply to the King’s Speech.
Issues such as Brexit, voting reform and the environment would get greater prominence.’
