Van Tom Waits’ ‘Get Behind the Mule’ is een kale versie uitgekomen. Die heeft als ondertitel ‘spiritual’ en werd uitgebracht ter gelegenheid van het feit dat het album ‘Mule Variations’25 jaar geleden uitkwam.
Waar het nummer op het album wordt gespeeld door Waits, drummer Stephen Hodges, bassist Larry Taylor, gitarist Smokey Hormel en mondharmonicaspeler Charlie Musselwhite, spleet Waist het in deze versie solo op elektrische piano:

‘Mule Variations’ was niet alleen Waits’ eerste album voor label Anti, het was ook het eerste album van het destijds nog maar net opgerichte label zelf. Dat ontstond als een soort dochter van punklabel Epitaph om Waits’ nieuwe uit te brengen.
Daarom liet Brett Gurewitz, de oprichter en CEO van dat label, dan ook een persbericht verschijnen: ‘Reaching the 25-year milestone for Anti Records, I am filled with gratitude for Tom Waits and his album, Mule Variations, which didn’t just start our label; it sparked a lasting partnership built on trust, creativity, and a love for pushing artistic boundaries,’
Ook Anti-directeur Andy Kaulkin deed natuurlijk een forse duit in het zakje: ‘I’ve personally been a major Tom Waits fan for as long as I can remember. We started the label to release his music. Tom’s embodiment of the spirit of artistic authenticity and resilience was our north star when we started out, and his unparalleled creativity continues to inspire and drive everything we do.’
