John Oates krijgt op 16 september verrassend genoeg de BMI Troubadour Award uitgereikt in het kantoor van de BMI in Nashville.
Hoewel ik me bij een troubadour eerder een singer-songwriter voorstel dan een man die klassiek werd als de helft van blue-eyed soul-duo Hall & Oates, is die hem toegekend doordat hij ‘has made a profound impact on the creative community as their craft continues to set the pace for generations to follow’, zo staat in het juryrapport.
‘John Oates has enriched Nashville and its music scene with his special blend of soulful storytelling and guitar playing’, schrijft Clay Bradley, de vice-president creatieve zaken van BMI Nashville, en: ‘His influence has elevated our community to be more accepting and open to all genres of music.’
In ieder geval bevindt Oates zich in uitstekend gezelschap, want Lucinda Williams, John Prine, John Hiatt, Robert Earl keen en Billy Gibbons gingen hem voor, al is Gibbons ook een nogal onverwachte keuze.
Eerdere onderscheidingen die Oates ten deel vielen zijn de uitverkiezing in de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 samen met Daryl Hall en het hem toegekende lidmaatschap van de Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004.
