James Taylor is op maandag 19 augustus geweerd van de democratische conventie.
Taylor was gevraagd om ‘You’ve Got a Friend’ te komen spelen en was daarvoor ook al aanwezig, toen hem te verstaan werd gegeven dat zijn optreden was geschrapt.
De reden was wel een heel prozaïsche: door het vele enthousiaste applaus was het programma aan het uitlopen en blijkbaar waren de organisatoren er bang voor dat Taylor daar wezenlijk aan zou bijdragen, of de lengte van applaus na zijn klassieker.
Taylor bleef ook in dit geval de gentleman die hij is en berichtte via de sociale media dat de repetitie heel goed was geweest en dat het was ‘exciting to see and hear so many of the speakers at the opening night of the Democratic convention here in Chicago.’
Hij ging als volgt verder: ‘But it became clear, as the evening unfolded, that there wouldn’t be time for our ‘You’ve Got a Friend’ with cello and voices. Maybe the organizers couldn’t anticipate the wild response from the floor of the United Center…Anyway, sorry to disappoint. But a great and inspirational, quintessentially American moment. We were honored to be there.”
