Bluesmannen Taj Mahal en Keb’ Mo’ maakten in 2017 al het album ‘Tajmo’. Dat won een Granny in de categorie Best Contemporary Blues Album.
Inmiddels hebben de twee een nieuw album opgenomen.
‘Room on the Porch’ staat gepland voor 23 mei en bevat tien songs, waarvan de meeste door de twee samen werden geschreven. Ook produceerden ze het samen.
In een gezamenlijk persbericht schrijft Taj Mahal: ‘If you take the African imprint out of Western music for the last 500 years, there’s almost nothing left.
As much as it might feel like we’re touching on all these different genres, the way I see it, we’re just connecting with the music of our ancestors and their influence on what’s happening now.’
Keb’Mo’slaat ook in zijn woorden een lichtere toon aan: ‘That first album turned out so great that part of me wondered if maybe we just got lucky. But when we got back into the studio together, I felt that same magic again, and I realized it wasn’t luck at all.’
Inmiddels is het titelnummer uit.
Daarin zingt singer-songwriter Ruby Amanfu mee. Haar stem toont grote overeenkomsten met die van Dolly Parton en ook de fiddle voegt er de countryelementen aan toe die ook op Keb’Mo’s twee recentste albums hoorbaar waren, ‘Oklahoma’ en ‘Good to Be’ hoorbaar waren.
Het begon als een riffje van Mahal: ‘This song started out as a little guitar piece I used to play by myself after shows when I was still wired from the stage. I shared it with everybody in the studio, and then Keb’ and Ruby Amanfu built this whole beautiful song around it.’ :

De twee gaan ook op tournee door de VS om hun album te promoten.
Op de dag van het uitkomen ervan staan ze met Amafu in The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.
