Op 17 november a.s. komt Mavis Staples’album If all I was was black uit.
Voor die plaat herstelde Staples de samenwerking met Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, die eerder haar You are not alone en One true vine produceerde, voordat Staples Living on a high note liet produceren door Michael Ward.
In de songs spreekt Mavis Staples zich uit over de in de VS opnieuw opgelaaide rassenkwestie, b.v. in het door haar geschreven titelnummer: ‘If all I was was black/Don’t you wanna know me more than that?’
Tweedy’s rol is groot, want hij produceerde niet alleen, hij schreef ook zeven songs voor Staples, terwijl hi drie andere samen met haar componeerde.
In het persbericht laten de twee geen twijfel bestaan over hun inspiratie. Staples schreef onder meer: ‘We’re not loving one another the way we should.’…..’Some people are saying they want to make the world great again, but we never lost our greatness. We just strayed into division.’
Tweedy is zo mogelijk nog duidelijker: ‘I’ve always thought of art as a political statement in and of itself – that it was enough to be on the side of creation and not destruction. But there is something that feels complicit at this moment in time about not facing what is happening in this country head on.’
