Van Joni Mitchell komen vroege live-opnamen uit als onderdeel van de aangekondigde box ‘Joni Mitchell Archives Vol. 2: The Reprise Years (1968-1971)’.
Het gaat om twee sets die ze speelde in maart 1968 Le Hibou Coffee House in Ottawa.
Mitchell trad daar voor het uitkomen van haar debuut ‘Song To A Seagull’ twee weken lang op.
Bijzonder is dat Jimi Hendrix deze opnames maakte, helemaal als je weet, dat hij dat deed terwijl hij voor het podium op de grond zat.
Hij trad op in het Capitol Theatre in die periode. Hij schreef erover in zijn dagboek: ‘Talked with Joni on the phone. I think I’ll record her tonight with my excellent tape recorder (knock on wood)… hmmm… can’t find any wood… everything’s plastic, Went down tot he little club to see Joni – fantastic girl with heaven voice.’
Een paar dagen nadat Hendrix de optredens opnam, werden zijn bandjes gestolen. Daardoor werd jarenlang gedacht dat de opnames verloren waren, totdat ze recentelijk opdoken in een privécollectie. De eigenaar doneerde ze aan de Library and Archives Canada, waarna ze weer bij Mitchell terechtkwamen.
